Not too long ago, myself and Jasmine Smith (who is also doing her Erasmus year with me out here in Madrid) noticed that our home university were advertising black and white 35mm film photography submissions for an exhibition that would take place on their New York trip at the end of March this year. The brief detailed they were taking submissions relating to the theme of the outsider within photography and that it would be a pop-up exhibition in ‘Bushwick Community Darkroom’ on the 31st March in Brooklyn. We were both very eager to take part in this and decided to create a collaborative fashion and portraiture conceptual project relating to us being both insiders and outsiders of Madrid and its community in terms of photography. We conducted our shoots with the chosen models on the 6th and 7th of February and have just recently found out that we have been accepted to be exhibited via Coventry University for the exhibition! Firstly, we had to send them digital versions of our submitted photos and then (as were selected), we had to post them our negatives which they will soon print to exhibit physically in the exhibition space.
We’re both really excited and it’s such an amazing opportunity to be able to have work shown in such a happening place for photography. It’s allowed me to truly appreciate how living here in Madrid constantly gives me new chances to create exciting work, via its interesting and picturesque backdrops. It has also made me thankful to be able to share with others who will see the exhibition and viewers of this work, how we have experienced living in Madrid, engaging with who we photograph and how we feel within the community.
Here are our three photos that will be exhibited in the New York exhibition (we could only submit 3 maximum):
Furthermore, here is my website link to the full details about the project and its content (artist statement and photos):
