Immersed

(2019) - in collaboration with Jasmine Smith.

‘Immersed’ is a project which explores the current worldwide issue of water scarcity; the amount of water people are deprived of within a region. The body of work aims to raise awareness to those who are unaffected or uninformed by its consequences. According to WorldWildlifeFund (WWF), “Only 3% of the world’s water is fresh water”, (2019) and National Geographic claim, “Fourteen of the world’s 20 megacities are now experiencing water scarcity or drought conditions.” (2018). As of when these facts were published, it is plausible that the situation has worsened, motivating the photographers to contribute in their own visual art form.

The photographers have captured the concept of the project by using purposeful methods; which are arguably an alternative aesthetic compared to documentary imagery. The intention being to reach a wider and more diverse demographic through using fine art imagery, rather than the real scenes of photojournalism.

WWF also state: “At the current consumption rate, this situation will only get worse. By 2025, two-thirds of the world’s population may face water shortages.” (2019). Therefore, ‘Immersed’attempts to provoke empathy from the audience towards those who are suffering and consequently to consider their usage of fresh water which can contribute towards global change.
